My journey to be a counselor has many twists and turns. After a life changing event in 2009, I returned to school receiving my Masters in counseling in 2011 from Troy University, Montgomery, Alabama. My decision to enter counseling was influenced by caring counselors that helped me a difficult time in my life. I have felt called to pay it forward by helping others with life situations that prevent them from living a meaningful life. I have my LPC license in Alabama and currently have my Provisional Mental Health License in Florida. My wife and I felt God was calling us to South West Florida to use the gifts He has given us to serve Him and help others, so we took a huge leap of faith and moved in 2017.
My primary background in counseling has been in substance abuse working with individuals and families that are affected by this devastating disease. People with addiction are not bad people but are dealing with a disease that affects them physically and emotionally. Substance abuse is often a symptom of deep underlying issues that have not been dealt with. The person affected is using the only coping skill they know how to use. Through caring therapy, a client is able to address underlying issues to achieve a level of recovery that allows a rebuilding of life and relationships.
I also have experience in counseling with individuals and couples who struggle with life circumstances that seem overwhelming. Listening with an open mind and offering constructive feedback are important keys to helping a client resume an emotionally stable life. In other cases, counseling may involve in-depth analysis of the problem and hard work resolving the issue.
I have been married to my loving wife for 43 years. We have two daughters and three grandchildren (two grandsons and one sweet granddaughter). The decision to move to South Florida was a difficult decision as it meant leaving them to start a new life, so our visits are always enjoyable. I understand the importance of self-care and quality time with those I love, which is something I enjoy helping clients learn as well.
